A SmartSpace home at dusk

About

A studio of engineers, for spaces that should feel quiet.

Our Story

The SmartSpace Installations founders in branded uniform

SmartSpace began in Perth more than a decade ago with a simple frustration: home automation systems were being sold instead of designed.

We started small - a few residential projects, mostly through architect referrals, and grew the studio one carefully briefed home at a time. Today we work across smart homes Perth-wide, luxury new builds, multi-residential developments, and commercial fit-outs.

Every project is led by a senior engineer from the first meeting through to handover and beyond. We don't sub-contract programming. We don't disappear after the invoice. The system you live with is the system we designed.

01 · How we work

Every job runs the same six stages.

We stopped quoting on phone calls a decade ago. Every project starts with a site visit - senior engineer on the ground, walking the house or building with the client, measuring, listening, understanding how the space is actually used. That visit is where 80% of the design decisions get made, and it's the reason our systems feel considered rather than assembled.

From there we scope, quote, engineer, install, commission and support - six clear stages, each with a nominated lead and a written handover to the next. You always know who to call and what happens next.

  • 01Site visit and brief - senior engineer, on site, no phone quotes.
  • 02Design and quote - itemised scope, brand-specific, no vague line items.
  • 03Engineering pack - schematics, cable schedules, keypad engraving.
  • 04Installation - our own uniformed crew, licensed electrical and security trades.
  • 05Commissioning - scene programming, calibration, keypad tuning.
  • 06Handover and support - training, documentation, 10-year workmanship warranty.

02 · What we stand for

Local control, no monthly fees, no vendor lock-in.

Every system we deliver runs locally on hardware you own. Lights, blinds, climate, cameras and locks keep working when the internet drops, when a US cloud provider has an outage, and when a brand changes its subscription model. That's not a marketing line - it's an architectural choice we make on every quote.

We prefer open platforms with a long roadmap - Lutron, Crestron, Control4, Ubiquiti, Home Assistant, Apple Home - and avoid locking clients into a brand that will be discontinued in five years. When we recommend hardware, we recommend what we install in our own homes and what we're comfortable supporting a decade after the invoice.

We are Perth-based, Perth-owned, fully employed (no subcontracted programming), uniformed, insured, and licensed. Every install is signed off by a WA electrician and, where required, a WA Security Agent - not a hobbyist with a drill.

03 · Frequently asked

What Perth clients ask on the first call.

Do you charge for a site visit?

No. Initial site visits across Perth's western suburbs are free. We drive out, walk the property, listen to the brief and follow up with a written scope and quote - no obligation.

Do you use subcontractors?

No. Every install is delivered by our own employed crew. Design, programming, installation and commissioning are all in-house. We do not sub the programming to overseas or another company.

What's your workmanship warranty?

10 years on our workmanship on every install. Hardware warranties are the manufacturer's - typically 2-5 years, longer on Lutron, Crestron and Ubiquiti.

Do you service outside Perth?

Perth metro and the western suburbs are our primary service area. We travel to Margaret River, Dunsborough and Busselton for larger residential projects on a case-by-case basis.

Can you take over a system another installer set up?

Yes - it's about a third of our support work. We audit the existing install, document what's there, fix the immediate issues and offer ongoing support from that point.
