Smart Lighting Perth

Light, designed and controlled.

Overview

Smart lighting Perth homeowners actually want - scene-based Lutron and Crestron control, dimmable, tunable, and tied to circadian rhythm.

Lighting is the single biggest move in any smart home Perth project. Get it right and every other system feels considered.

We work with the architect and interior designer from the schematic stage, then specify, install and programme keypad-driven scenes that reflect how the house is actually lived in.

Every install uses commercial-grade hardware - Lutron HomeWorks, Lutron RA3 or Crestron, so the system runs reliably for decades, not seasons.

Lighting control that flatters the architecture

Smart lighting is the single biggest change you can make to how a home feels. A good lighting design layers ambient, task and feature lighting on independent circuits, then groups them into scenes - Morning, Cooking, Entertain, Cinema, Goodnight, so the right look is one tap away. Done well, it makes a $2m home feel like $5m.

We design and install Lutron RA3 and HomeWorks, Crestron Horizon, Clipsal C-Bus and DALI systems Perth-wide. Every keypad is engraved per scene, every dimmer matched to the load, and every LED downlight, strip and feature fitting commissioned for flicker-free, full-range dimming.

  • 01Custom-engraved Lutron, Crestron or C-Bus keypads
  • 02Architectural-grade LED downlights and linear strip
  • 03Astronomical clock - exterior lighting follows sunset
  • 04Voice and app control via Alexa, Nest or HomeKit

Retrofit or new build - both done properly

On a new build we work alongside the architect, builder and electrician from plan stage, specifying the panels, looms and cable schedule so the system is invisible. On a retrofit we use wireless Lutron and Aqara products that need no rewiring - full lighting control can be delivered in a weekend without lifting a single floorboard.

Every job is commissioned on-site with the household, scenes balanced for actual living patterns, and supported long-term by our team. Lighting is the system that runs most often - it has to be flawless.

Why we dim, group and scene - not just switch

Smart switches that just turn lights on and off are 1990s thinking. Modern lighting design is about dimming curves, grouping (perimeter, feature, task), and scenes that combine multiple groups for a single mood. A great kitchen has at least four lighting layers - perimeter downlights, pendant feature, undercabinet task, kicker accent, and a great scene blends all four at the right levels for breakfast, dinner party or 2am snack.

We design every Perth project with this layered thinking before any fitting is selected. The result: fewer fittings, lower energy use, and rooms that feel composed rather than over-lit.

LED quality matters more than the controller

A Lutron dimmer driving a $4 Bunnings LED looks worse than a basic switch driving a quality fitting. We only specify LED fittings with TRIAC or 0–10V dimming, CRI 90+, and 2700–3000K warm-white tone - Brightgreen, Erco, Iguzzini, Unios. The cost premium is small and the lighting quality is unrecognisable.

DALI, C-Bus, Zigbee and Lutron - which platform suits which house

There are four realistic ways to do smart lighting in a Perth home and they suit very different projects. DALI puts an addressable driver behind every fitting, giving individual control and precise dimming of every downlight - the right answer for architectural projects with tunable white, colour temperature scenes and a lot of fittings.

C-Bus centralises everything in the switchboard on DIN relay and dimmer units. It's robust, serviceable by most Perth electricians, and cost-effective once you're past about twenty circuits, which makes it the default on larger new builds.

Zigbee and similar wireless platforms replace the switch or the globe rather than rewiring. That makes them the practical choice for retrofits in existing homes, apartments, and anywhere opening the board isn't on the table. The trade-off is that you're depending on a wireless mesh and on a hub that needs to stay alive.

Lutron sits at the premium end for dimming quality and switch feel. If the brief includes deep, flicker-free dimming down to one percent on high-end fittings, it's the platform that reliably delivers it.

  • 01DALI - per-fitting addressing, tunable white, architectural and high-fitting-count projects
  • 02C-Bus - centralised DIN switching and dimming, large new builds and renovations
  • 03Zigbee / wireless - retrofit into existing homes and apartments without rewiring
  • 04Lutron - premium dimming performance, low-end dimming and switch quality
  • 05Hybrid - centralised lighting with wireless zones where cabling isn't practical

Dimming curves, flicker and why cheap LED fails

Nearly every smart lighting complaint we get called out to fix is a dimming problem, not a control problem. The scene works, the app works, and the lights flicker at 20% or refuse to turn on below half brightness.

The cause is almost always a mismatch between the dimmer and the LED driver. Trailing-edge dimmers suit most modern LED drivers; leading-edge dimmers were built for halogen and will make a lot of LED loads buzz or strobe. Then there's minimum load: a dimmer rated for a 400W circuit driving three 8W downlights often sits below its minimum and behaves unpredictably.

Fitting quality decides the rest. A dimmable LED driver from a reputable manufacturer will run smoothly to 1%; a bargain driver will step visibly and drop out at the bottom of its range no matter what dimmer is in front of it. We specify the fitting and the dimmer together and bench-test unusual combinations before they go into a ceiling.

Designing scenes people actually use

A lighting system lives or dies on its scenes. Four or five well-chosen scenes per living area get used daily; twenty scenes get ignored and everyone goes back to switching individual circuits.

The set that works in most Perth homes is a bright everyday setting, a lower evening setting that drops the downlights and lifts the lamps and feature lighting, a cooking or task setting for the kitchen bench, a TV setting that kills glare on the screen, and a very low path-lighting setting for the hallway and bathroom overnight.

Automation on top of scenes should be nearly invisible. Sunset triggers the external and feature lighting, occupancy sensors handle the walk-in robe, the pantry and the garage, and a single button by the back door turns the house off on the way to bed. Anything that surprises the household gets disabled within a week.

Retrofit paths in an existing Perth home

Retrofitting smart lighting into an existing house depends on what's behind the wall plate. Where the switch has a neutral available - common in homes wired in the last fifteen years - a smart switch module fits behind the existing plate and controls the circuit exactly as before, plus app and scene control.

Where there's no neutral at the switch, which is common in older Perth homes, options are a battery-powered wireless switch paired to smart globes or a driver module at the fitting, or running a neutral, which means opening the wall.

The middle path most homeowners land on is centralising the main living areas properly - new dimmer modules at the board or behind the plates in the rooms that matter - and using wireless controls in the outer bedrooms. It costs a fraction of a full rewire and covers 90% of daily use.

FAQs

Frequently asked.

Quick answers to what Perth clients ask most. Anything we haven't covered? Get in touch.

Lutron vs Philips Hue - which is right for my home?

Hue is great for one or two rooms and rented apartments. For whole-home lighting in any Perth home you own, Lutron RA3 or HomeWorks is the right answer - better dimming, real keypads, integration with everything else, and a 20-year lifespan.

Can I retrofit smart lighting without rewiring?

Yes. Lutron RA3 uses wireless dimmers that fit into existing wall boxes, so most homes can be retrofitted without opening walls. New builds get HomeWorks with proper home-run wiring back to a central rack.

What is a lighting scene?

A pre-programmed combination of light levels - 'Cinema' might dim the lounge to 20%, turn off the kitchen, raise the hallway to 10%. Activated by one keypad button, voice command or schedule.
