After a UniFi install most clients tell us it's the most impactful single upgrade they've made to the home - Zoom calls don't drop, streaming doesn't buffer, doorbells respond instantly, and the wireless reaches the pool. The cost is genuinely modest for what it delivers (typically $3,500-$8,000 installed for a 3-4 bedroom home).

We also use UniFi Protect for residential CCTV - same single app, no monthly fees, AI person and vehicle detection, and footage that's actually usable. It's our default CCTV platform for any client running a UniFi network.

Consumer mesh kits (Eero, Deco, Orbi) are fine for a Netflix household. They start to fail the moment you add 40–80 smart devices, four 4K cameras, a Sonos system, an electric vehicle on the home network, and a remote-working couple. They run out of channels, lose roaming clients and reboot under load.

A UniFi install with a Dream Machine Pro, USW-Pro switches and ceiling-mounted U7 access points gives every room a dedicated radio, separates IoT onto its own VLAN, and runs for years without intervention. The whole-of-life cost is lower than re-buying mesh kits every three years.

Every UniFi install starts with a gateway, a switch and access points, and the sizing of each is decided by the house rather than by a package price. The gateway handles routing, firewall and VPN; a Cloud Gateway suits most homes, and larger properties with heavy multi-gigabit traffic move up the range.

Switch sizing is a port count exercise plus a PoE budget. Every access point, camera and doorbell draws power over its Ethernet cable, so a switch with enough ports but not enough PoE watts will start dropping devices as the system grows. We count the devices, add the PoE draw, and then add spare capacity because there's always another camera.

Access point count comes from construction, not floor area. A rendered double-brick home needs an access point roughly every major zone, because brick and render kill 5GHz and 6GHz signal fast. A timber-framed home of the same size might need half as many. We survey rather than guess.

Perth builds harder houses for WiFi than most Australian cities. Double-brick with render is standard here and it attenuates 5GHz badly, so the mesh node that works fine in a Melbourne weatherboard will not cover the same floor plan in Floreat or Applecross. Add foil-backed insulation in the roof and a concrete first-floor slab and a single-router house has no chance.

The fix is wired backhaul. Access points connected by Cat6 back to the switch each provide full-speed coverage in their own zone. Wireless mesh nodes halve their throughput relaying traffic, and each hop compounds it. We use mesh only where running a cable genuinely isn't possible, and we tell you where those compromises are.

Access point placement follows the same logic as lighting: ceiling-mounted, central to the zone, away from metal ducting and water tanks. A unit stuck on a shelf in the corner of the study is wasted hardware.

WiFi 7 and 6E add the 6GHz band, which is fast, uncongested and blocked by walls even more effectively than 5GHz. In an open-plan area with the access point in the same room, it's a genuine improvement. Through two brick walls, it's not there at all.

That means the value of 6GHz in a Perth home depends almost entirely on access point density. If you're wiring one access point per zone anyway, WiFi 7 hardware is worth specifying. If you're trying to cover a house with two units, spending the extra on the newer standard buys less than spending it on a third access point and the cable to reach it.

The other honest point: most household devices still cap out well below what WiFi 6 already delivers, and the real-world bottleneck is usually the NBN connection, not the wireless. We'd rather size the coverage properly than sell the newest silicon.

A properly configured UniFi network separates traffic rather than putting everything on one flat network. Cameras and doorbells go on their own VLAN with no route to the internet except what they need. Smart home devices sit on another. Guests get an isolated network that can reach the internet and nothing else. Family devices sit on the trusted network.

This matters because cheap IoT hardware is the most commonly compromised thing in a modern home, and a flat network means one weak device can see everything else on it. Segmenting costs nothing in hardware, only in the time it takes to configure properly.

We change every default credential, disable the manufacturer cloud relay where the device doesn't need it, keep firmware current at handover, and hand over the admin credentials to you. Remote access is provided through the UniFi gateway rather than by opening ports on your router to the internet.
