Home Automation Guide — A Perth Homeowner's Primer
What home automation actually is, and what it costs to do properly.
Overview
The complete home automation guide for Perth homeowners — what's possible, what's not, the major platforms (Crestron, Control4, C-Bus, Lutron), and realistic budgets for each tier.
Home automation means one platform controlling lighting, climate, blinds, audio, security and access — through wall keypads, touchscreens, voice and a single app. Done right, it disappears: scenes run automatically, the house just works.
There are three serious platforms in WA: Crestron (top-tier, fully custom, $40K+), Control4 (premium residential, $18K–$45K) and C-Bus (Australian-made lighting backbone, $8K–$25K for lighting only). Lutron handles lighting and blinds beautifully and pairs with any of them.
Avoid 'automation' built on consumer hubs (SmartThings, Hubitat) for anything beyond a small flat — they fail at the 100-device mark and there's no professional support behind them.
Start with lighting. It's the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade, and a properly designed lighting system future-proofs the rest of the automation. Add climate, blinds and audio in stages from there.
