Installing a pet door into glass is a specialist job — the panel has to be removed, cut to a precise circular or rectangular cutout, edges polished and the door sealed back into the frame. We coordinate the glazier, the door supplier and the install in one job.

Works in sliding doors, French doors, fixed panels and even some double-glazed units (where the manufacturer permits). Toughened replacement glass is standard for safety.

The two options for glass: cut existing or replace

When the panel is single-glazed and not heat-treated, an on-site glazier can sometimes cut the opening in the existing glass. Cheaper, faster — but riskier; toughened glass cannot be cut, and many older panels turn out to be toughened once tested.

The safer option (and what we recommend for double-glazed and large panels) is to order a replacement panel sized to the existing frame with the cutout already made at the factory. Adds cost and lead time, but the result is a warranted, code-compliant install with no chance of shattering the original glass.

Can you fit a pet door into a sliding glass door?

Yes — the two common approaches are (1) replacing the existing glass panel with one that has a circular or rectangular cutout, or (2) fitting a panel insert that slides into the existing track. We'll recommend the right approach after a site visit.

Does it work with double-glazed glass?

Sometimes — most double-glazed units cannot be safely cut after manufacture, so we usually order a single replacement panel sized to the original frame with the cutout already made. Adds 2–4 weeks to the timeline.

Will cutting the glass weaken the door?

All replacement glass we install is toughened (tempered) safety glass, sized and cut by licensed glaziers to Australian Standards. Edges are polished and the cutout is sealed — the resulting panel meets the same impact rating as the original.
